Lake Sakakawea - Aug 17-19

Updated: Jan 1, 2019

It's the dog days of summer, but we still managed some great fish. The best day saw a limit of 19-25 inch fish with another big one breaking a line and getting away. Interestingly the bite switched back and forth from crawlers and spinners to crankbaits, so we started trolling both at the same time! We put crawlers down on short lines and crankbaits out back with longer lines and lighter bouncers and pulled both at about 1.2 mph in 22-30 feet of water. The bigger fished took to the crankbaits and more numbers came on the crawlers.

The other two days were slower due to afternoon heat one day and nearly unmanageable winds the other, but we were still able to get into some really nice 18-23 inch fish in the first few hours of the morning before the heat and grinding it out in the afternoon. We worked the Van Hook Arm on the west side and out into the main lake as far as Independence Point.

Catch of the day at 25 inches
